Ford 2003 Cobra Pinion Brace Install

The following pictures are from the installation of a 2003 Ford Cobra Pinion Brace into my 1998 Mustang Cobra. I purchased this brace from Ford Parts Network for $79.95+shipping. A brace similar to this one was developed for and introduced on the FR500 Mustang. This brace ties the front of the pumpkin to the IRS subframe more solidly. This should keep the pumpkin from moving when torque is applied to it during acceleration. This will help eliminate some of the wheel hop present in the IRS during acceleration. You can also see where the Steeda Cobra Differential Bushings are installed.

1. The first step is to remove the exhaust from the cats back. You can see the old brace that is held in place with the two nuts and bolts that hold the lower A arms in place. Do not remove the bolt. Just remove the nut and back out the bolt enough to get the brace out.

2. Here is a side by side comparision of the two braces. Notice the extra tabs on the 03 unit. These tabs connect the pumpkin to the brace.

3. Next I removed the front two bolts from the pumpkin. You then install the 03 brace onto the lower A arm bolts. I then reinstalled the front pumpkin bolts through the 03 bracket and into the pumpkin.

4. I then torqued everything to specs and reinstalled the cat back exhaust. Lastly put the tires back on and lowered the car.

5. Impressions. I really didn't notice much of a difference. I could see that the pupkin is now installed more securely and should help the wheel hop. It must do something or Ford wouldn't have wasted the time or money to install them on the 03 Cobras. Plus it was only $80.
